Say it in a sentence: The Christian life is not only about what I am dead to, but much more it’s about what I am alive to (Rom 6:14).
- God does not think of me as under the Law, but under grace through Christ Jesus
- God is not keeping score. He’s not frustrated by the fact that I have bad week, month, or year.
- A true Christian does not pursue more sin, but more love and growth in Christ.
- Change is 1,000 little choices, though one bad choice often leads to many more
- It takes far more energy to get up than it is to maintain
- Victory is only in the next moment, not in 1,000 days or hours of success, that is only a tallying of the moments.
1. We’re all slaves to something/someone. (Rom 6:15-16)
- “Do you not know” is an appeal to what is obvious, already known by the hearer
- If I do whatever (whomever) says without question, then I am a slave that person/thing
- Some people look at Christianity as burdensome and restrictive, but they find that when they get what they want apart from Christ, they are already a slave it that thing. They pursued freedom but found slavery. Christianity is true freedom because it offers real choice.
2. Slavery to sin is broken through obedience to the Gospel (Rom 6:17)
3. Jesus’ followers are slaves to righteousness (Rom 6:18)
- Am I slave to righteousness? A. Acutely aware of unrighteousness in my life; B. Constantly wonder if I’m pleasing my master; C. Have to reconcile when I fail, with God and others
4. Victory is accomplished when we present ourselves to God (Rom 6:13,19)
- Don’t press Paul’s analogy too far – “I speak in human term”, don’t transfer the negative imagery of slavery into our life with Christ.
- It feels like victory, not slavery (Rom 6:19)
- It require a choice (Rom 6:13)
- It happens moment by moment (Rom 6:13)
Practicing the process of change:
Crisis:
Repentance:
Process:
- Know the power of sin is broken in me
- Reckon myself dead to sin, moment by moment
- Offer myself dead to sin, moment by moment
- Offer myself alive to God, moment by moment
- Note: When I fall in the process, I must return to the crisis
